The library was established in 1993, to enable Centre researchers to access information relating to their research projects.

Subjects covered deal mainly with agriculture and agricultural workers on commercial farms in South Africa.

Although the focus is on South African material, other countries are represented as well, with particular emphasis on Latin America.

Specific issues covered include labour law and labour relations, working conditions, housing, HIV/AIDS, tenure, socio-economic conditions, land reform and rural local government.

Particular emphasis is placed on gender aspects relating to the above.

The database consists of approximately 6 800 records. Many of these are papers donated by staff, obtained through contact with colleagues, conferences and meetings attended, etc. Staff publications comprise about 380 records.
